Ideal Grill Temperature Based On Thickness
In terms of thickness, if your cut of meat is around a half-inch thick, you need the temperature to be around 425 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and ensure that the coals’ temperature is medium-hot. In terms of being around ¾ of an inch thick to an inch in thickness, make sure your coal’s temperature is at 360 to 400.

For medium Filet Mignon, opt for an internal temperature of 155 degrees Fahrenheit instead and grill it for seven minutes on each side instead.

Eyeballing steak’s cooking and grilling times is often difficult and, more importantly, not recommended if you’re planning to achieve the perfect temperature. Here’s a breakdown of meat’s thicknesses and cooking times that can help you pinpoint exactly how long you can cook your steak for.
